Royal College of Paediatrics cites WESPGHAN as the best practice example for standard 9 of Facing the Future: standards for acute general paediatric services

The Royal of Paediatrics and Child Health have cited the WESPGHAN to be a ‘best practice example for standard 9 of Facing the Future: Standards for acute general paediatric services which explains the Wessex Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition Network, which provides immediate specialist telephone advice across the Wessex region. Access to specialist paediatric advice is crucial to enable general paediatricians to appropriately and effectively manage the care of children with specialist needs.

Standard 9: Specialist paediatricians are available for immediate telephone advice for acute problems for all specialties, and for all paediatricians.

Visiting Regional Specialist Paediatric Gastroenterology clinics operate in Portsmouth, Dorchester, Chichester, Basingstoke, Salisbury, Poole, Frimley Park, Jersey and Guildford. A new clinc is being set up in Guernsey which will start operating in 2019.




The Wessex Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Network is a regional network of nurses, dieticians, trainee doctors, paediatricians and paediatric gastroenterologists caring for children and teenagers with bowel, nutritional and liver diseases.

WESPGHAN aims to:


  • Establish a Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Forum for exchange of information among professionals working and interested in paediatric gastroenterology hepatology and nutrition in the Wessex.
  • Adopt best practice offering quality to patients and providing scope for professional development. This involves developing disease specific treatment guidelines, care pathways, patient information and patient involvement in care.
  • Promote joint audit for evaluation continual improvement of services and care. This additionally involves promotion of research and evidence-based service development.
  • Benefit our future paediatricians and professionals whilst providing a platform for social meeting.
