Nigel Humphreys is the consultant lead for clinical governance, and on seeing the number of prescribing errors made by doctors thought there had to be a way of improving things.

Luckily he had a background in programming, and designed a prescribing app for the iPad.  He will be giving a demonstration of the paediatric prescribing software.

Prescriptions are generated based on date of birth and weight. It is designed to present prescriptions exactly as they need to be written and so is customisable to incorporate local prescription chart formats etc. It can incorporate text, images, video etc as guidance for prescribing, presented alongside prescribing info. It generates labels for use on charts to minimise transcribing errrors.

The app has now progressed as is also implemented for web browsers both mobile and pc. A dedicated web application is also available to allow pharmacists or medics to enter prescribing information, in a format similar to bnfc. This has an inbuilt audit trail to conform with information governance requirements.

Feedback from the Paediatric Intensive Care community has been very positive with at least 2 units planning to use it. Nigel is interested in extending the app to incorporate neonatal prescribing.
