The new Strategic Health Authority, NHS West Midlands is one of 10 new Strategic Health Authorities that came into effect on July 1st 2006. The 10 new Strategic Health Authorities are a streamlined reconfiguration of the previous 28.

NHS West Midlands was created following a reconfiguration of three previous Strategic Health Authorities: Shropshire and Staffordshire, Birmingham & The Black Country and West Midlands South.
