National Bike Week Why not organise a cycling event as a means to promote a healthier way to travel?

BiKe Week 19-27th June 2010

Team Green Britain Bike Week

Why not organise an event as a means to promote a healthier way to travel?

Team Green Britain Bike Week is the biggest cycling event in the UK with thousands of free activities in villages, towns and cities everywhere. Team Green Britain Bike Week will take place from the 19-27 June 2010, and this year we want the event to be as big as possible, so we are encouraging everyone to rethink their everyday life styles and switch to cycling to improve their fitness, confidence and self esteem.

To help promote Team Green Britain Bike Week we are encouraging as many companies and individuals as possible to sign up as event organisers and promote the benefits of cycling to their community. We would appreciate your help in spreading the word.

What are the benefits of cycling?

Cycling gets you fit and can improve confidence and self esteem - you'll look and feel better just by cycling regularly Cycling is sociable - provides the perfect excuse to share some time with friends and family Cycling is "green" - do your bit for the environment, every journey by bike is one less in the car Cycling is quick - cycling is usually faster for short journeys than any other transport Cycling is cheap - no bus, train or season tickets required Cycling is convenient - gets you door to door with a guaranteed arrival time and your bike is always ready and waiting Most importantly - cycling is fun!

To help your friends, family, colleagues or local residents achieve the above benefits you can organise an event for Team Green Britain Bike Week!

What help would you get from Team Green Britain Bike Week?

On the Team Green Britain Bike Week website there are lots of suggestions to help you set up an event ranging from led rides, cycle training, bike breakfasts, Dr Bike and fundraising to name a few.

Case Study - Adult beginners ride

An activity that is very popular with event organisers is the adult beginners ride. This is where a group of cyclists meet up with a guide at a designated point and are led on an off-road route. This allows people to gain more confidence by cycling in a safe environment and incorporates a new means of transport into their everyday lifestyle.

Things you need to consider when organising a beginners ride:

. Central location for everyone to meet up, ideally somewhere safe . Safe routes, look at the National Cycle Network for traffic free routes . Think about a looped course, people can be nervous about the solo return journey . Look into bike rack locations, see if people can lock their bikes up at the finish . Create an incentive by awarding a prize to the person who cycles the most amount of miles in a month following the ride . Incorporate a picnic or BBQ at the finish for an added incentive to take part in the event . Create an internal newsletter or weekly email for the people taking part in the bike ride

The above points highlight a few key areas an event organiser will need to consider when planning a bike ride. The Team Green Britain Bike Week team offer a variety of resources to help you plan your event no matter what idea you decide on.
