NICE publishes quality standard for COPD

Do you agree with the new BTS home oxygen guidance that the 1st sampling for LTOT assessment should be a true arterial stab?

1. Yes: the inconvenience for the patient is outweighed by the fact that this will reduce prescribing home oxygen to a group of people who don’t meet the LTOT guidelines

2. No: The CBG technique is much more patient friendly and the results obtained by capillary sampling are close enough not to make a material difference in a real life setting.

NICE publishes quality standard for COPD

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has published its Quality Standard for COPD. NICE Quality Standards are central to defining quality care in the modernised NHS, working alongside the NHS Outcomes Framework.

The NICE Quality Standard for COPD was published on 29 Jul 2011. It covers assessment, diagnosis and clinical management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults. The scope of the quality standard does not include prevention, screening or case finding. The Quality Standard makes clear that it should be used alongside the Outcomes Strategy for COPD & Asthma.

The quality standard includes 13 statements that aim to define high quality care for patients including:

  • people with COPD should have a current individualised comprehensive management plan, which includes high-quality information and educational material about the condition and its management, relevant to the stage of disease.
  • people with COPD who smoke are regularly encouraged to stop and are offered the full range of evidence-based smoking cessation support.
  • people with advanced COPD, and their carers, are identified and offered palliative care that addresses their physical, social and emotional needs.
