New Good Practice Guide - Home Oxygen Assessment & Review

Do you agree with the new BTS home oxygen guidance that the 1st sampling for LTOT assessment should be a true arterial stab?

1. Yes: the inconvenience for the patient is outweighed by the fact that this will reduce prescribing home oxygen to a group of people who don’t meet the LTOT guidelines

2. No: The CBG technique is much more patient friendly and the results obtained by capillary sampling are close enough not to make a material difference in a real life setting.

New Good Practice Guide - Home Oxygen Assessment & Review

A new national Good Practice Guide to the development and commissioning of assessment and review services for home oxygen patients has been published.

The Guide - for commissioners and respiratory teams  - has been put together by a broad range of professional and patient stakeholders.  These include the Department of Health, the British Lung Foundation, the
Primary Care Respiratory Society, the British Thoracic Society and the British
Paediatric Respiratory Society.

It reflects and explains current good practice in home oxygen in the assessment and review of patients.

The guide can be downloaded from the NHS PCC website.
