Home Oxygen update for Chief Executives

Do you agree with the new BTS home oxygen guidance that the 1st sampling for LTOT assessment should be a true arterial stab?

1. Yes: the inconvenience for the patient is outweighed by the fact that this will reduce prescribing home oxygen to a group of people who don’t meet the LTOT guidelines

2. No: The CBG technique is much more patient friendly and the results obtained by capillary sampling are close enough not to make a material difference in a real life setting.

Home Oxygen update for Chief Executives

SHA and PCT Chief Executives have been sent an update on the Home Oxygen reprocument. There is a particular focus on the need for commissioning Assessment and Review services.

The Chief Executives have been sent a letter by Professor Sue Hill (Chief Scientific Officer) to update them on the progress of the Home Oxygen Service reprocurement and to remind them of their obligations under the new HOS contract.

In particular, the HOS suppliers have a duty under the new contract to align their work with the Home Oxygen Assessment and Review services in their area.

These will be separately commissioned (as a clinical service) under the commissioning arrangements in each locality.

The letter also provides an update on future commissioning arrangements for the overall HOS contracts.
