Query received by the SNOMED CT in Primary Care team: Will it be a big bang switch over of the Principal Clinical Systems or will the previous codes be converted? Will data be backdated?

Response from Denise Downs, Implementation and Education Lead, SNOMED CT in primary care, NHS Digital : Suppliers will add SNOMED CT codes alongside the Read codes already recorded in patient records; this will be done using national mapping tables (these are the ‘translation tool’ from Read codes to SNOMED CT). Systems can switch to SNOMED CT as the primary coding scheme anytime between now and 1st April 2018 (i.e. users select and enter SNOMED). Once the Principal Clinical Systems switch to SNOMED CT, new data will initially be recorded in both Read and SNOMED CT (although users will only enter SNOMED CT) to enable Read codes to be made available to any systems that have yet to transition. During this time only a subset of SNOMED CT will be available in the system to allow this ‘dual coding’. Once the transition is achieved (deadline 1st April 2018) then all of SNOMED CT will be available; note that searches written in SNOMED CT will run across all the data in the system. Further details on requirements and the standard can be found at http://content.digital.nhs.uk/isce/publication/scci0034
