Query received by the SNOMED CT in Primary Care team: Is the April 2017 date the start of the implementation or the end date when all Principal Clinical System suppliers will have implemented SNOMED CT? Is there a roll out plan? For example, will primary care suppliers be implementing it in their systems first before other parts of the NHS?

Response from Denise Downs, Implementation and Education Lead, SNOMED CT in primary care, NHS Digital: The primary care deadline is 1st April 2018. The deadline for all the NHS is 1st April 2020. Some hospitals are already using Snomed coding (all national programme systems required SNOMED CT) but there needs to be conformity by 2020 as per the policy document ‘Personalised Health and Care 2020: a Framework for Action’. SNOMED CT is now a standard under the Health and Social Care Act 2012. If community data is recorded using a GP practice system e.g. EMIS Web or TPP SystmOne, they will need to have adopted SNOMED CT by 1st April 2018. Any new standards that are now approved will need to use SNOMED CT for recording health and care related data that needs to be submitted in a standardised way, a number of standards already require SNOMED CT.
