Whole System Demonstrator sets the cost bar for telehealth

WSD results published by the BMJ in June 12 set out some interesting challenges for the standard telehealth business case.  This post from the Nuffield Trust urges caution as the average saving from reductions in hospital admissions equates to 0.14 avoided admissions per patient. To plan a business case around avoided admissions, just to break even the system you choose must cost less than 0.14 of an admission + providers running costs per patient.  The standard model of telehealth also increases provider activity beyond what it would otherwise have been, thereby adding to the cost challenge.  However, following the guidance of the national QIPP LTC work stream there is way forward.
