Telemedicine Update March 2011

Progress to date;

  • There is now a 24 hour thrombolysis service available for stroke patients at Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals as well as University Hospital of North Staffs. Burton Hospital offers a service until 9pm but aims to increase this later this year to 24 hours.

  • Consultants across Shropshire and Staffordshire are working together to provide cover for this service to ensure that as many acute trusts can offer the out of hours service.

  • It is hoped that the telemedicine technology will be purchased later this summer to use alongside the thrombolysis service.

  • Paula Wells - Network Patient & Public Involvement Lead is working with the project lead to develop a patient feedback questionnaire to gauge patient perception of the new technology when is in use.

  • Work is underway to identify training that will be required to use the new technology. This will ensure all staff who are working in Accident and Emergency Depts and acute stroke units will be fully trained to use the technology.

  • A host provider for the system has been identified. Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust will be working alongside South Staffs Health Informatics Service to procure and install the system in the 3 trusts from April 2011 onwards.

The aim is for the technology to 'go live' later this year.
