4.6 Paramedics in practice - journal article
Up to 4. Develop the team

A recent article in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine reviews the growing use of paramedics in general practice.
The authors note that the first-contact generalist training of paramedics can fit well into a general practice team. They cite evidence showing high patient satisfaction with emergency care practitioner (ECP) care in primary care, and of the cost effectiveness of this (with ECPs often ordering fewer tests and making fewer admissions than other clinicians).
The article also includes a reminder to work with local ambulance services when considering the use of paramedics in the primary care team, to avoid potential adverse effects on the paramedic workforce or other services.
