Guide to Management Information Sources Online

Last updated 25 November 2013.

Government departments, agencies and the NHS

The Department of Health, NHS and its agencies address areas related specifically to health care management, governance, innovation and leadership. They publish research reports, working papers, policy documents, guides to good practice and learning materials.

University research centres

A number of universities run research centres and postgraduate programmes in the area of health care management typically located within Business Schools and occasionally Faculties of Health. Universities undertake research funded by UK Research Councils, government departments and agencies and independent research that reflects specialist interests. Research results are usually presented at conferences, published in reports, working papers and finally in peer reviewed journals.

Independent charities, foundations and think tanks

Independent of government, these organisations produce research that informs change in health care organisations. Produced from the perspective of their own remit for political or social change, research from these sources typically seeks to challenge established practices and ideas.

Professional organisations

Organisations whose members share a professional status and a common set of concerns. Professional organisations may not fund research directly, however, they do promote current awareness, the dissemination of relevant research and best practice to their members.

International organisations

Organisations which represent the interests of managers and executives on a national or international basis.

A number of universities offer management courses as MOOCs or Massive Online Open Courses. These courses are free and non credit bearing, offering a certificate of completion if you finish the programme. Courses typically last 2 -8 weeks requiring 4 - 8 hours a week study time. All materials are usually provided as part of the course package. Courses may require you to complete some form of online assessment. Major providers are listed here:

Statistics

The most comprehensive source of statistics for the UK are the official statistics collected by various central government departments and agencies to inform government policy. They are published by the Office of National Statistics [ONS] via the National Statistics website. The Department of Health publishes statistics in the areas of health care, workforce, public health, and social care. The NHS Information Centre for Health and Social Care provides access to statistics on behalf of the NHS in the areas of commissioning, workforce, finance & performance, clinical, public health and social care.

Journals

Professional journals

Professional journals publish journalistic articles and comment on topics of current interest addressing the interests of a specific professional readership, for example NHS managers.

Peer reviewed journals

Peer reviewed journals publish original research, reviewed by academic experts (or peers) to ensure appropriate quality and conformity to existing norms of research practice. Peer reviewed journal articles typically consist of a review of the literature, methodology, results, discussion and analysis. They make extensive reference to published research and include extensive bibliographies.
