Improving outcomes for patients with COPD and asthma – is inhaler technique the magic bullet?

It is estimated that across the North West £52 million is spent on inhaler prescriptions each year.  Fifty per cent of patients don’t know how to use their inhalers correctly and patients with poor inhaler technique are more likely to exacerbate and to be admitted to hospital.  Ensuring good inhaler technique is the cornerstone of respiratory prescribing.

Erratic prescriving of antibiotics had led to high rates of patients with CDiff in Tameside.  The development of a Smartphone app for NHS teams has helped to improve compliance with local antibiotic prescribing forumalaries and rates of CDiff have improved dramatically.
