About us

The Network was established in 1996 in response to a need for NHS organisations to work together to improve services rather than to continually “reinvent the wheel”. The Network is hosted on behalf of the NHS by East London NHS Foundation Trust, with web hosting and finance services provided by North of England CSU.

The Network was established in 1996 in response to a need for NHS organisations to work together to improve services rather than to continually “reinvent the wheel”. The Network is hosted on behalf of the NHS by East London NHS Foundation Trust.

The NHS Benchmarking Network works with its members to understand the wide variation in demand, capacity and outcomes evident within the NHS and define what good looks like. This supports providers in delivering optimal services within resource constraints, whilst also allowing commissioners to achieve the best balance from available commissioning resources. Delivery of good outcomes and excellent patient experience is part of our work in sharing best practice across the NHS and other health and social care services.

Our current membership of around 250 organisations, covers the four home countries of the UK and includes Clinical Commissioning Groups, Commissioning Support Units, Community Provider Organisations, Local Authorities, NHS Acute and Mental Health Trusts in England, and equivalent organisations within the other national health care systems in the United Kingdom.

The NHS Benchmarking Network also works with national organisations such as The Department of Health, NHS England, Welsh Assembly Government, and professional bodies, such as the British Geriatrics Society.

Steering Group

The Network is overseen by a Steering Group made up of representatives from member organisations. The Steering Group decides on priorities for the Network work programme, following consultation with the Sector Reference Groups and wider membership.

Reference Groups

The Reference Groups are sub-committees of the Steering Group covering the Commissioning, Community, Acute and Mental Health sectors. These groups advise the Steering Group on member preferences for their sector and oversee project development and delivery.
