Changes to the STP Learning guides 2011/12 (Nov 11)

Details of the changes made in the updated Scientist Training Programme Learning Guides for 2011/12 - in the November 2011 update

These amended 2011/12 Learning Guides replace the previous versions.  The curricula have not changed.

These new guides relate to the rotational elements for all specialisms in the first part of the work based training programme. The learning guides in respect of the specialist years are being further developed in conjunction with the professional bodies and will be released early in 2012.

The revisions have been made with the help of professionals and those delivering the programmes in all of the disciplines. Changes include comments from professional bodies and Heads of Departments.

The changes made are broadly;

  • Learning guides have been reformatted and restructured to ensure they are easy to use
  • The new guides indicate where some learning outcomes can be achieved through experiential learning
  • Some competences have been redrafted to ensure they are clear and achievable
  • Work based knowledge has been added to the competencies to help trainee understand what is included, although the knowledge is not exhaustive and is intended as a guide
  • The learning guides have been reviewed to ensure that they reflect achievement which is possible within a 10-12 week placement

The content of the online tool will reflect these revised learning guides.

As part of ongoing quality assurance of the training programmes, these learning guides will be reviewed following the rotational periods to enable any lessons to be incorporated into future years.
