It's Getting Bigger every day

Rather like a pregnancy the buzz about social media and the advantages for using Twitter to stay up to date is becoming quite an issue for Professionals wishing to stay 'up-to-date'

The NMC latest Review is really focused on Information and what it can do for us.

I was musing with a colleague the other day and I had a light-bulb moment. I think we need to demystify the implications of using social media for our managers and the people we work with who are concerned and unsure if the Information revolution is a good thing.

1.    It is out now and like a new born infant we cannot push it back where it came from

2.    When we are talking face to face in a public area, and we want to say something confidential- we lower our voices or move to another space......exactly the same with social media

3.    If you would not say something directly to me, do not say it to others

4.    Don’t SHOUT, never post an angry comment- you will live to regret it!

5.    Do not use offensive words,

All very sensible and reassuring, but the power of being able to discuss with other professionals is so compelling. In my career, I have worked in places where I have practiced in very different places, away from supervisors and co-workers who were from the same training and background as myself, if I could have used RCM Communities, Twitter, LinkedIn or similar, or been able to search online, I would have been more confident and reassured in my practice.

Have a look at some of the guidance recently added to the NMC site. Especially useful-Talking with Patients online- where are the boundaries
