Happy New Year to the Members of the Midwives Informatics Network

2012, a New Year with some significant challenges

Hello everyone, by now you will be returning to your workplaces following bank holidays and annual breaks, some of you will have been manning the labour wards, wards and community settings too.

This New Year brings with it some very significant challenges to the Midwifery Profession and the families we serve, the harsh economic climate is affecting us all professionally and personally.

Informatics and Information technology specifically can help us respond o these specific challenges, by making it easier to increase work-loads, whilst preserving quality services and safety. The key is releasing Midwifery time, - Time to care and time to learn, time to manage and respond to the increasing demands from our employers and our ' customers'

Some services are looking to re-procure Information systems and others are looking at technology that allows real time recording of information whilst reducing duplication- Digital pens, PC Tablets and specialist equipment that allows contemporaneous information exchanges in the delivery room (the paper-less labour ward.

Let us know if you have one of these projects ongoing. My own Trust- The Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust in Birmingham West midlands is looking to upgrade or re-procure and we have been arranging site visits and already had an options appraisal event.

The systems available in the commercial market are aware of the demands - More for Less, and are offering different ways to finance and achieve the levels of technology that Maternity services need.

Share your stories and frustrations here........

 Best wishes

Julie Tindale- National Clinical Lead for Midwifery for Department of Health Informatics Directorate
