The citation for Jonathan Applebee & The Clinical Technology Team, Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust read:

Back in 2009, Jonathan took over the leadership of the Clinical Technology team based at Derriford Hospital delivering a comprehensive range of clinical engineering services.  Since then he has been developing and progressing a detailed workforce plan which covers all aspects of the service and includes a succession plan.  The initiative which I would particularly like to highlight is the design and introduction of an innovative new role which Jonathan has called Technical Inspector (graded at Band 3).  This new role has enabled Jonathan to strengthen the ‘patient and service user facing’ aspects of his service and to assign a whole range of patient safety and technical duties to a team of two Technical Inspectors who are very visible on Wards and in clinical departments, thus enabling more senior staff to focus on other priorities.  We are now in the second year of implementation and much has been learnt and fed back into how this role is now being delivered.  This is an excellent example of listening to the team’s frustrations and ideas and then designing and implementing a workforce solution which has delivered demonstrable improvement in safety, quality and efficiency – and so capably executed by the Technical Inspectors themselves.
