Music is the one thing that dementia cannot destroy. This is an extraordinary statement. What else does this insidious illness, with its accumulative, heartbreaking losses, leave more or less intact by the end?

I can say it so emphatically because I have either watched or been told about the effect of music on literally thousands of people with dementia.

As long as the music chosen is uniquely personal to an individual’s life and past experience, it can bring them back to a sense of themselves, improve their mood and (for a time at least) their cognitive abilities, and in virtually every case make them feel better. This is truly wonderful. Of what drug can we say that?
