The carers’ covenant
A report from the think tank Demos calls for a new settlement between the state and informal carers.
Demos says there are now almost 8 million informal carers in the UK providing services worth £139bn – more than seven times the UK’s total annual spend on adult social care. The report sets out an overhaul of current policy, including the introduction of a new payment dubbed universal carer’s income for all those providing care for more than 35 hours a week.
