Specialist GP genetics services would benefit patients at greater genetic risk of developing cancer

A new study published in the British Journal of General Practice has found that specialist GP services led by genetics counsellors would have benefits for patients at moderate and high genetic risk of developing cancer, by improving referrals and providing cheaper and more convenient services for patients.

A trial carried out by researchers from University Hospital Southampton found that educating GPs about genetic testing helped them make more appropriate referrals, and that 80 per cent of patients referred could be managed without them attending a hospital based genetic counselling clinic.
