Report on audit of specialist rehabilitation following major injury

The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published a synopsis of the third and final report on the provision of specialist rehabilitation following major trauma.

The report notes significant improvement with many more patients surviving their initial insult. However the review shows that only 40% of patients with complex rehabilitation needs seen in the major trauma centres (MTCs) received inpatient specialist rehabilitation. Of those patients who did receive specialist rehabilitation there was evidence of functional improvement in the vast majority (94%). Recommendations for commissioners include regular review of processes and referral pathway, opportunities for development of specialist rehabilitation capacity, both for inpatient and community-based services, and review of standards.
