Progress in making NHS efficiency savings

The NHS fell slightly short of the target of £5.9bn in efficiency savings in 2011/12, according to figures from the Department of Health showing savings of £5.8bn.

The figures come with the caveat that the figures are based on trusts’ own estimates and have not been independently verified. The department refers to a separate estimate by the National Audit Office suggesting total savings in the region of £3.4 billion.
