Professor Sir Mike Richards named as chief inspector of hospitals

Professor Sir Mike Richards is to leave NHS England to take up the post of chief inspector of hospitals.

The former cancer csar will be responsible for assessing the quality of care of patients in NHS hospitals. He will provide the public with assurance that services are safe, effective, caring, well led and responsive to people’s needs.

Professor Richards was recently put in charge of improving mortality at NHS England following 12 years as national clinical director for cancer services.

In his new role he will oversee teams of hospital inspectors that will carry out routine inspections. He will also lead the development of a ratings system for NHS acute hospitals and mental health trusts.
