Problems with GP prescribing of metabolic foods

Therapeutic dietary treatment is central to the management of many inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs).

Children and adults are prescribed a range of approved specialised nutritional products and foods, which are essential for normal development. Unlike gluten-free foods, low protein foods are only available on prescription.  Increasingly, CCGs have been questioning their use and restricting access to lifesaving medical treatment. Further information can be found in the prescribed specialised services manual.
