PM announces extra £1.8bn for NHS

Prime minister Boris Johnson has confirmed a £1.8bn NHS cash injection. Just under half the money will be used to fund specific capital projects at 20 hospitals.

The remainder will go on other infrastructure projects. The money is “new” in the sense that the government has reversed previous spending restrictions on trusts. While the sum is far short of the £6bn estimated maintenance backlog, critics are hopeful that it signals greater willingness to spend on the NHS by Mr Johnson’s government than by its predecessor. Changes to the NHS pension scheme to prevent senior doctors from being penalised financially for taking on extra shifts are expected to be announced by the health and social care secretary later this week. More.....
