Planning for patients: the role of Section 106 planning contributions

In the past five years local planning authorities failed to spend more than a third of the funding they secured for the development of healthcare infrastructure, according to a report by the think tank Reform.

The report says that of £87m available to planners, more than £34m is currently unspent. The report blames a lack of awareness of the Section 106 planning contributions process, insufficient expertise and skills among staff, and poor co-ordination. It concludes that the NHS is missing out on potentially millions of pounds that could go towards improving and delivering vital services for patients.
