NHS England and NHS Improvement to go for formal merger

Barely a year after they announced their intention to form closer joint working arrangements, NHS England and NHS Improvement are to seek a formal merger with Simon Stevens as sole chief executive.

The news, which emerged from last week’s joint board meeting, signals the departure of NHS Improvement chief executive Ian Dalton, who has announced that he will step down. It also casts doubt on the position of Matthew Swindells, currently Simon Stevens’ deputy at NHS England, as no equivalent role is expected to exist in the new organisation. It is not yet clear when the reorganisation will take place or whether it will be possible without formally amending existing legislation.
