Making a success of practice mergers

Practice mergers can save practices from failing and create the scale necessary for primary care and wider system transformation. Mergers can result in economies of scale, better use of clinical workforce, financial sustainability and better services to patients. But if mergers are not planned properly and implemented effectively, providers are left with the bill and commissioners are often left to pick up the pieces.

PCC has supported a number of successful mergers, starting by working with the practices concerned to identify their reasons for wanting to work together and helping them to find common ground where differences exist. We can also advise on the contracting options available and crucially, ensure that they obtain agreement in principle from commissioners before making advanced plans.

We facilitate initial exploratory meetings and later detailed discussion around how decisions will be taken and what processes will be adopted by the merged organisation. We ensure that clear lines of communication are in place with partners, staff, patients and commissioners; that the financial picture is clear; that premises issues have been worked through; and that the right partnership agreement is in place.
