Health secretary pledges to increase training places for doctors

Jeremy Hunt has announced that 1500 more training places will be created for doctors next year, an increase of 25%.

Speaking at the Conservative party conference, the health secretary linked the move to the large number of overseas doctors working in the NHS and said it was the government’s aim to make the NHS more “self-sufficient”.  The proposals he outlined also include a four year lock-in to ensure that doctors trained here who choose to work abroad may be liable to repay part of their training costs.
