Clinical pharmacists vital to patient care in five-year GP deal

Pharmacists will take on an expanded role at the heart of local primary care networks across the country, NHS England says.

The new GP contract highlights the role of pharmacists in providing expert advice about prescriptions and medicines as part of core practice teams.

Thanks to the success of the existing clinical pharmacists in general practice programme, part of the GP Forward View, and new funding for general practice over the next five years thousands of new pharmacists are expected to start work in surgeries.

Work is underway to recruit clinical pharmacists in each primary care network alongside GPs, nurses, physios, therapists and social care providers.
