Clinical guidelines on statins are guidelines not tramlines, says RCGP
The RCGP has responded to a study published in BMJ Open on statins prescribing.
Its chair, Helen Stokes-Lampard said: “Clinical guidelines are very useful tools for GPs when developing a treatment plan for patients, but they are guidelines, not tramlines. GPs are highly trained to prescribe based on the individual circumstances of the patient in front of them – taking into account the physical, psychological and social factors that might be affecting their health, as well as patient choice.”
