Call to improve coding and care for acute kidney injury

Clinicians and coders are being urged to take action to record and code acute kidney injury (AKI) accurately, to help improve patient care and make significant cost savings within the NHS.

Patients with AKI have longer hospital stays, are more likely to need critical care and are at increased risk of long term health problems, at great financial cost.

NHS Kidney Care has produced a report with recommendations to improve the recording, coding and commissioning of AKI. The report will also help healthcare professionals to allocate resources for appropriate management of the condition.

Responses and feedback should be emailed to admin@kidneycare.nhs.uk with ‘AKI recording and coding’ in the subject line by 31 December 2012.
