Artificial turf – and other secrets of a well-run practice

When Dr Mike Smith joined the Maltings Surgery in St Albans, Hertfordshire in 2018 the partners’ first job was to make the practice a better place to work, then they turned to workload.

In this week’s podcast, he explains how a new appointments system has dramatically reduced demand for face to face appointments, allowing the practice to cope with a 32% increase in demand overall. Mike also set about changing the workforce mix - and argues that primary care can often deploy new skills without directly employing new staff. In part 2 of this interview next week, Mike, who is clinical director of the local PCN, talks about the challenges of the role and poses the three questions the centre needs to answer if it hopes to keep the show on the road.
