A patient experience and view - Derek Mitchell PhD

Following his retirement from the Health Service due to illness, Derek Mitchell has continued to work in healthcare to give a voice to the people on the receiving end of care.

Once he became a ‘patient’ he realised that for too long ‘patients’ have been viewed as passive objects of care only able to react to what is being done to them. Derek’s aim has been to develop a new place in care for ‘patients’ not as reactive objects of care but as active and creative contributors with important stories to tell. Starting with the East Kent Stoma Care Service and then by developing more general thinking about what we, as those who are cared for, can bring to the table, he is trying to develop ways in which services can be re-engineered to meet the expressed needs of those who receive them.
