Figures at the heart of the inquiry that has shaken the NHS will address the UK’s largest gathering of patient safety experts for the first time in May, it has been announced today.

Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust’s Director of Nursing and former Medical Director are two of a host of keynote speakers set to explore the landmark public inquiry into the trust’s failings.

An exclusive discussion between the inquiry’s chair, Robert Francis QC, and the expert who oversaw the Bristol heart scandal investigation, Professor Sir Ian Kennedy QC will also take place at the Congress.

Over 100 other speakers from across patient safety, including the National Medical Director of the NHS Commissioning Board, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, and the Chair of Health Education England, Sir Keith Pearson, will also take the stage at the event.

Eminent international guests from over 17 countries will also present on a variety of topics spanning technology, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and healthcare policy. The programme includes the Executive Director of the Danish Society for Patient Safety, Dr Beth Lillja, and the Vice President of Quality and Safety at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr Elizabeth Mort.

This year’s prestigious James Reason Annual Lecture will see Professor Rene Amalberti discuss how lessons from industries including aviation can be applied in a healthcare setting.

Returning to Birmingham’s International Convention Centre (ICC), the Congress’ delegates will take part in over 78 hours’ worth of presentations and learning. In addition to the main sessions, two specialised one-day events will take an in-depth look at infection control and paediatrics.

Attendees will also be provided with extensive networking opportunities with over a thousand other visitors and exhibitors from across the public, private and third sectors.
