The NHS needs to change what and how it commissions to create patient focused integrated services within the resources available. Commissioners need to buy outcomes for services and not activity from organisations. This is a big change requiring technical knowledge and engagement with providers and communities.

The full-day workshop covers the basic considerations for this new approach using experiences and case studies from across the NHS.

The workshop explores:

• Understanding your population and existing spend

• How to decide what outcomes patients expect

• Buying outcomes - balancing spend against delivery

• Developing solutions with communities, providers and clinicians

• Thinking differently - working with providers to deliver integrated services

• How to shift the resources - using procurement to drive innovation and shape the contract

The workshop will allow commissioners at all levels to understand the potential for outcomes based commissioning for their population and the steps they need to take to make it happen.
