The aspirations of the Five Year Forward View depend on more imaginative and flexible contracting to overcome the problems posed by existing primary care contracts.

The NHS standard contract is the tool that should be used to contract with new models and systems of care. This new approach will require understanding of the mechanics of the contract and how it can be used to influence and change behaviours.

Jointly delivered by PCC and Capsticks, this event will help commissioners and senior managers in CCGs to understand how to develop system solutions rather than piecemeal services.

The event is also relevant for local authority commissioners, who also have the option to use the NHS standard contract, and for provider organisations who need to understand the implications of providing services under the contract.

The event uses examples of successful deployment of the contract, highlighting alternatives to existing routes and innovative approaches.  It will explore ways in which the contract can be used to overcome barriers associated with contracting with a number of providers holding different contracts.

The workshop will cover:

  • The key elements of the standard contract (15/16) and when to use it

  • Using the contract for primary medical services

  • Dispute resolution options

  • Contracting with multiple commissioners/providers and systems under NHS Standard Contracts

  • Creating the right incentives

  • Challenging behaviours

  • Alliance models

  • Contracting for outcomes under the standard contract

  • Understanding the risks

The interactive event has been designed to provide delegates with the opportunity to compare and contrast their own local thoughts, models and potential solutions, discussing these with one another and legal experts from Capsticks.
