Over the ten years from 2003/04 to 2013/14 there were 3,648 fires in hospitals and healthcare estates resulting in 412 casualties, including 4 fatalities. (source: Fire Statistics Great Britain 2013-2014).

The February edition of the Health Estate Journal www.healthestatejournal.com/hej-archive highlights the importance of effective planning for fire safety in healthcare estates by looking at the importance of incorporating good fire safety measures early in the design process.

To help address this, IHEEM has been working with NAHFO (National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers) to deliver a series of seminars on fire safety within healthcare estates. NAHFO is an organisation that acts as a national voice for all those associated with healthcare fire safety. It works closely with other organisations such as IHEEM to promote the highest standards of fire safety within healthcare environments.

The final seminar of the current series will feature industry experts covering a variety of themes:

  • Healthcare and the Fire Service Working Together
  • Plus size patients and their admittance to and movement around healthcare premises, emergency evacuation from those premises if a fire incident requires it
  • Fire Strategy: enabling safety and design excellence
  • Acoustic, smoke and fire seals for door assemblies
  • Fire Strategy: Enabling Safety and Design Excellence

Our chair for the seminar is Neil Gibbins QFSM NDipM FIFireE, Chief Executive Officer of the Institution of Fire Engineers. Neil was the past President of the Institution of Fire Engineers, the Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and the national lead for fire protection for the UK Chief Fire Officers Association. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer and Company Sectary for the Institution of Fire Engineers as well as a being a Fellow of The Institution of Fire Engineers.

These seminars are presented by IHEEM and NAHFO.
