This three module programme picks up on frequently asked HR related questions in primary care and is delivered by an experienced HR professional who has also been a practice and PCN manager. The modules provide information and advice relevant and applicable to the day-to-day running of general practice and are suitable for practice managers and other members of the team with responsibility for HR and staff management.

Performance management - discipline and grievance (Tuesday 29 September, 09.30 - 11.30)

Find out how to ensure that you approach discipline and grievance procedures fairly and consistently.

By the end of this session you will have:

  • A clearer understanding of discipline and grievance procedures including knowledge of relevant employment law
  • Knowledge of how to prepare for, and hold an investigation meeting
  • Examples of best practice for your discipline and grievance meetings, including the right to be accompanied, and sanctions, including an overview of what might constitute gross misconduct
  • Confidence that you are following the ACAS Code of Practice and mitigating risk to your partnership.

Performance management - sickness absence (Tuesday 29 September, 12.45 - 14.45)

Often we are concerned about managing sickness absence - whether it's a problem with frequent short term absence, or managing employees during a longer term absence.

This session will give you:

  • An insight into why managing absence is important and how to recognise if attendance is a problem
  • Tips for managing short term absence and what to do if you need to act formally
  • Managing long term absence: how to minimise long term absence, and how to support long term absentees.

Health and wellbeing in the workplace (Tuesday 6 October, 09.30 - 11.30)

Until Covid-19 mental ill-health was the biggest cause of long term sickness absence, now it may be more prevalent, so it’s essential that we look after the health and wellbeing of our employees.

This session will enable you to:

  • Identify recognise potential stress in others, and identify those at risk
  • Develop a policy and strategy for promoting health and wellbeing and reducing stress at work
  • Equip you with ideas to improve health at work and tips on supporting employees who continue to work remotely.

The programme is led by Rachel Stead, PCC associate. Rachel has significant experience within primary care working for a range of practices and more recently working alongside PCNs addressing workforce requirements. Prior to life in primary care Rachel was a senior HR manager with experience in a range of sectors, including charities, manufacturing and engineering.  Rachel is a Chartered Member of the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) and holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Employment Law.

The programme will be delivered via three zoom sessions (two hours per session, to include a break) and delegates will achieve maximum benefit by taking part in all three modules.
