Delegates who attend this workshop will have a better understanding of the regulatory, financial and contractual framework under which NHS dental services are commissioned and provided and the practical implications of contracting decisions.

Aimed at commissioners who are new to dental services and those who feel they would benefit from a refresher, the event explains how to commission and manage primary care dental services contracts effectively.

The workshop may also be of interest to individuals who are involved in the delivery of primary care dental services or may have a future role in commissioning dental services

You will gain the knowledge, insight and confidence to:

  • Manage contract change requests
  • Actively request contract changes
  • Implement and manage national variations
  • Issue contract notices.

The full-day workshop explains the current contract in light of the development of NHS dentistry. It covers the regulatory framework, primary care dental services, finance and contract management.

The workshop also considers the likely impact of the proposed dental contract reforms.

The day covers five areas:

  1. Overview of the development of NHS dentistry – an insight into the current contract and the dental contract reform programme.
  2. Regulatory framework – understand the regulations and the contractual frameworks affecting NHS dental commissioning and how they can be applied.
  3. Primary care dental services – understand the difference between primary, community and secondary care dentistry. Know who can hold a contract and provide NHS dentistry and ensure that contracts are fit for purpose. Understand the difference between mandatory and additional services and how to contract for these services.
  4. Finance – how a dental contract budget is comprised, how contractors get paid, when charges can and cannot be made, and exemptions.
  5. Contract management – overview of the policies and procedures available from NHS England and the practical implications of contract processes and changes (using practical examples including contract variations and notices).
