Understanding procurement and how to prepare a bid are critical to the future of primary care provides – such as general medical and dental practices. More and more services are subject to a procurement process, rather than being simply directly awarded by commissioners. These include many of the “enhanced” services that GP practices could once expect to win almost by default, or for dental practices, additional services such as orthodontic services.

This event explains why understanding procurement matters, how the process works and how to prepare a bid. It includes practical advice, clear explanations of terminology and other technicalities, a walk through typical procurement documentation and questions, pitfalls to avoid when preparing bids, tips on good practice, and advice on how to choose which bids to go for.

The session is led by Alan Turrell, who has seen all sides of procurement – as a designer of procurement processes for commissioners, as a user of procurement systems, and as an adviser in successful bids by providers.

Alan will cover the basics, including procurement law and regulations, and the national policy context. He will explain why the drive towards integrated care systems makes it more important than ever that providers understand both how maximise opportunities and how to meet the changing expectations of commissioners.

The rest of the day is devoted to the practical aspects of identifying opportunities  and winning new contracts, including:

  • An overview of the procurement process
  • How to gain market intelligence
  • Identifying the opportunities
  • Getting to grips with the documentation
  • Understanding the terminology
  • Responding through online systems
  • Managing the process to a successful outcome.

There will be advice on what to do and what to avoid, as well as tips and hints from Alan’s long experience as a procurement insider.

The session will also cover some of the key questions common to almost every procurement. Delegates will have the opportunity to work through some model questions in groups to practice their responses.

This event is essential for anyone responsible for business management or strategy in primary care provider organisations, federations and primary care networks. You will leave with a clear understanding of procurement, how to make the process as painless as possible, and what to do to stand the best chance of winning.
