Editorial

While everyone is paying attention to what is happening in Beijing, it’s worth remembering that the Olympics are on their way to Britain in four years’ time and it’s not too early to start thinking about the health implications.

There will be a huge influx of visitors from around the world: athletes, trainers, journalists and tourists keen to combine support for their national team with a holiday in London. That will both boost and skew the healthcare requirements of London while the games are happening.

The sheer logistics of the event will probably have a knock-on effect on the health and mental health of some of the thousand of people involved in organising the games, both during the build-up and afterwards as people realise that it’s finally all over. We can also expect increased participation in sport across the UK during the build-up which will of course lead to an increase in sports-related injuries.

It will be the biggest cultural event in this country for a very long time and it will affect every sector of society, including healthcare. So be prepared.

The next New@Networks will be sent out on Thursday 21st August.
