Healthy food is on the menu in Cambridge

With hospital food being the butt of many a joke over the years – Lifespan Catering Services has already shattered the myth that it has to be bland and boring.

And the Cambridge-based catering business, which provides 32,000 portions of hospital food each day, is continuing to re-enforce its commitment to the environment and the carbon footprint reduction.

A year ago, Lifespan Catering Services was presented with the ISO14001 environmental standard for providing a quality service, while paying attention to keeping waste and the impact on the environment to a minimum.

During the past few days, assessors have returned to Ida Darwin Hospital in Fulbourn to re-evaluate the previous findings.

A subsequent report from the BSI (British Standards Institution) inspectors praised Lifespan Catering Services for its continuing work toward carbon footprint reduction – looking at ways to decrease the amount of red meat and diary products used its in meals, as well as sourcing over 80 per cent of its ingredients within an 80-mile radius.

Lifespan Catering Services, the catering arm of Anglia Support Partnership, has been in its current existence since 1990.

With a team of 55, overseen by head of catering services Trevor Colcomb, the business provides a ‘cook- chill’ meal service to NHS and community hospitals in and around Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Leicester and London.

Over 32,000 portions of food are produced each day, with the business operating seven days a week, 365 days a year. Over 5,000 patients eat the food daily.

The meals are freshly prepared on site at Fulbourn, cooked and chilled within rigorous guidelines, and delivered to the many hospitals and nursing homes – where they are re-heated and served to patients who are able to select from a hot trolley of well-presented and appetising food.
