Avoiding unnecessary referral for glaucoma: use of a repeat measurement scheme
A glaucoma repeat measurement scheme, in which the referring optometrist conducts the repeated test before deciding whether or not to refer, was set up in 2006 for all patients who were registered with GPs in the Bexley Care Trust area.
The aim of the scheme was to enable optometrists/ophthalmic medical practitioners to refine their own referrals for suspected glaucoma before deciding whether or not a patient should be referred to a hospital eye service. The resulting improvement in quality of referrals generated savings and released capacity.
