National Self Care Awareness Week, 9 - 15 November 2009
Self Care Week is a national awareness week, building on the successful launch of ‘Your health, your way’ (a guide to long term conditions and self care) on NHS Choices in November 2008. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the information and resources available to help people, and especially those with a long term condition take control of their own health and wellbeing and encourage them to take a more active role in decisions about their care.
The primary focus is on the public, people with a long term condition, patient/community groups and the voluntary sector. The campaign will also include key messages for health and social care organisations and front line staff.
PCTs and other organisations have arranged local events across the country to support the campaign by using the week to link with seasonal health messages including Winter Warmers, Sloppy Slipper campaigns and flu messages.
NHS Network members are encouraged to promote the campaign and raise awareness locally. A communications pack including a number of campaign materials to support NHS organisations hold self care week activity, and maximise the impact of the campaign locally, is available on the Department of Health’s website.
