PhD Bursary opportunity: Social Enterprise/ Allied Health professionals

The University of Northampton have an opening for a PhD Bursary. The role will be to establish if allied health professional services, in particular occupational therapy, can be provided through social enterprises

Applications are invited for a three year full-time PhD bursary studying the role of social enterprises in providing allied health professional services, in particular occupational therapy.

The proposed project will study current and planned social enterprise schemes aimed at delivering allied health professional services, in particular occupational therapy.

The project has five objectives, as follows:

  1. To identify and critically review policy, theoretical and research literature concerning the use of social enterprise to deliver health and social care services;
  2. Tto establish current modes of delivery for occupational therapy;
  3. To identify occupational therapists views of current delivery modes in relation to enhancing or limiting practice as per its philosophical base;
  4. To establish the perceived motivators and skills of existing health professionals within social enterprises;
  5. To recommend curriculum content to enable health professionals to be prepared for running and working within social enterprises.

The bursary is part of a research project that is jointly supervised by research staff from the School of Health (Dr Susan Corr) and Northampton Business School (Prof Simon Denny).

To apply for the bursary applicants must have a first degree (first or upper second) or a Masters degree in a relevant subject, preferably occupational therapy, social enterprise or health related business studies. Research experience at post graduate level will be an advantage but full training will be provided to the successful applicant. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and be able to relate to people in both academic and non-academic settings.

Closing date: 30th September 2009. Interview date: 22nd October 2009

Start date: Negotiable but no later than February 2010
