65% of PCTs planning structural changes in next six months: NHS Networks snapshot survey

The results of NHS Networks’ PCT survey are now in. Out of 48 respondents:

  • 60% have made structural changes in the last 6 months and 65% plan to make changes in the next six months
  • more than 60% have or plan to reshape commissioning functions
  • more than 60% have or plan to reshape the executive team
  • more than 40% are making changes to their PEC
  • over 70% over respondents are doing this in response to changing national policy

but

  • over 50% also cited internal capacity pressures as a driver

Only four respondents haven't made any changes in the last 12 months, nor were planning to.

The vast majority of respondents are happy to share details of these changes and participate in further work to develop our knowledge.

As a next step, we will be contacting a range of respondents to develop some practical case studies sharing details of what the changes were, what they wanted to achieve and how they did it.  The case studies will be publishedhere shortly

We can also try to connect you with other a PCTs facing similar challenges or opportunities

NHS Networks is building a body of knowledge about current organisational design to support organisations considering structural changes.  So far we have:

  • Developed an organisational design toolkit for PCTs resulting from discussion with NHS leaders and designed to support Board level debate about function and form
  • Signposted to other current, valuable pieces of work
  • Carried out this survey of PCTs to build on the toolkit by developing a range of case studies of changes in action with the help of Ararna Consulting
