NHS National Workforce Projects

Supporting urgent care networks

Our role is to support NHS organisations achieve their workforce objectives and find solutions to the challenges that may prevent them from having the right people in the right healthcare roles in the future. We deliver this through the development and implementation of a range of workforce projects, each focussing on a particular need the NHS has identified. We work in partnership with a wide range of organisations and our projects are designed to deliver tools and ways of working that can be practically implemented by the NHS.

The urgent care public service agreement board has identified that high level planning skills are required to plan the future workforce in order to deliver responsive and effective urgent care services closer to the patient. It also acknowledges that the majority of ambulance trusts and urgent care networks have had limited exposure to competency based workforce planning or indeed whole system planning and have approached NWP to design and deliver a development programme for staff from both ambulance trusts and urgent care networks.

NWP have developed a programme of workforce visioning and planning events to support urgent care. The first round of events is directed to the newly formed ambulance trusts and will take place between October and December 2006. The second series of events will be directed to urgent care networks, details and venues to be confirmed.

As a result of this development programme ambulance trusts and urgent care networks will have access to an evidence base of knowledge that they can draw upon in order to respond effectively to the strategic HR and workforce development agenda in order to deliver 'Our health, our care, our say'.

It is important to test the interest and relevance of this project with the current urgent care networks ,any feedback would be most welcome.

There are many tools and resources available free on the NWP portal and also in development under the urgent care banner are the urgent care workforce planning resource pack and an urgent care baseline database.
